Welcome to Tia's website! Oklahoma native Tia Shawnte was a singer, songwriter, playwright, and poet who wrote and performed in a variety of genres from the age of 12. Her "Native Son" song and video below pay tribute to Mother Earth and to her American Indian heritage. She was Chickasaw ... as well as Cherokee, Irish, English and German. One of her Cherokee relatives survived the Trail of Tears.
The mayor of Austin, Texas, in 1993 proclaimed Feb. 4 as "Tia Shawnte Day" in honor of Tia's "Native Son." The mayor of Nashville and the governor of Tennessee by proclamation recognized Tia for her work championing social causes. Please listen to and watch "Native Son" below, hear the message, and share it with all who care about our planet and the American Indians.
Tia would invite you to explore her site and sample some of her work. Another of her songs with a social message is "The Forgotten," written to honor the Vietnam veterans, who never received the respect they deserve. But Tia not only was a social activist, but a performer of country, gospel, pop, blues, Irish ballads, and classical songs. She had a comedic streak, as well, and wrote comedy songs, as well as performed as the character "Old Granny Wisecrack," a tell-it-like-it-is Southern cracker -- and proud of it.
